Beginner's Guide to Disc (Frisbee) Golf

Why Disc Golf is Awesome

  • You only need one disc to get started, just pick up a mid range and you can add a few along the way.

  • Discs are cheap- they cost $10-15 dollars a piece

  • you don't need a tee time or reservations for almost all courses are the US

  • you can make new friends just walking in the park

  • Most places are parks, so you’re allowed to bring your dog and a few beers :)

Object of the Game

The object of the game is to get the disc into that basket about 300 feet away in as little as strokes as possible. Every stroke is a throw, so if you’ve ever played golf (ball golf that is), there’s a similar scoring concept.

For example, if you have a hole that is a par 3, you’ve got 3 chances to get the frisbee into the basket. There's normally 18 holes in a disc golf course just like a regular golf course. At the end of the game, you tally all your strokes and lowest score wins.

There are three main types of discs to get started. Each of them are shaped differently to go a different distance and have a different loft.

  • Driver: it's thin, it's heavier and it can go far if you really put your hips into the throw. You don't necessarily need this disc to start playing, but once you get the throwing form down, you're gonna want some length to your drive.

  • Mid-range: this is a great starter disc because it is so versatile and easier to throw than the driver. It's behaves like a putter because it’s predictable and also like a driver because it can still go a good distance. If you're gonna start with one disc, I would choose a mid-range disc.

  • Putter: this disc will bring you home and land you in the basket. It has a lot more loft and almost acts like your traditional frisbee that you play with on the beach or you play ultimate frisbee in the park.
